COMM[UNITY]

Our Mission

To inspire the community of Hout Bay to make a difference to the lives of local children through regular, targeted donation drives: do what you can, with what you have, where you are!

What do we do?

Organised by locals for locals, CommUNITY encourages the residents of Hout Bay to collect unwanted, gently used goods for a monthly ‘Drop Off Day’ in aid of local charities. By compiling a Needs List based on their greatest necessities, each drive will focus on a specific charity in our neighbourhood such as James House, Little Lambs or Ikhaya Le Themba.

These needs often include food parcels, bread, school stationary and uniforms, toiletries, toys and warm blankets. However, needs also vary due to natural disasters, seasonal weather and emergency situations.

How does it work?

Yellow! The Drop Off Day will initially be promoted by official yellow posters in shop windows and flyers in mailboxes, as well as a spotlight in local newspapers, radio stations and posted on the Hout Bay Facebook groups. In the days running up to the Drop there will be bright yellow banners in the street and on the Drop day, all Drop Off Stations will be marked by yellow balloons hanging outside each entrance. Drop Off Stations will include the chosen charity, Custom Feeds, as well as the Security Gate of each private estate. Additionally, Spar will have a trolley at the entrance where shoppers can drop in goods bought in-store from the laminated Needs List.

How can I see the results?

The Facebook page: CommUnity Drop Off Day is where the public can follow all news, updates, photos, videos, personal stories and future events. I will personally assist each chosen charity and document the intake and sorting of goods, the process of use, and how these items impact the running and budgeting of the charity itself as well as those in need. It is important for residents to see how their donations are making a difference, and to feel a sense of pride and responsibility in playing a part in their commUNITY.

For the future

It is a great hope that should this prove successful then neighbouring suburbs could join their CommUNITY Drop Off Days on the same date. It is a dream that the suburbs of South Africa would turn yellow! Local charities will be recognised and assisted, unused items will continue to serve others in need, and locals will be able to practice compassion - connecting with every neighbour in our commUnity.

In the words of Mother Theresa, “There is no greater joy than the joy of giving!”
